Actually, the issue of the background color is the known issue and we have already informed the theme author about it.
We will release the update fixing the issue.

Regarding your query, this theme is a widget-based theme.
Can you tell me in which section are you trying to change the background color? The main background color only changes the background color of pages/posts or the latest posts in homage.
If you are trying to change the background color of the Homepage widget area then go to Appearance > Customize > Color Options > Home Widget Color Options and then change “Widget Background Color”.
