I believe I was told it was possible to remove/change the orange slice and such background images in the pro version but cannot find anything in the docs? How can I remove or change these – they do not fit at all…

Since the image added here are static so you can remove the image by adding below given CSS by going to Admin Panel > Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS and paste the CSS.
.page-decoration {
    display: none;
}Also, there is no such feature to change the image so better you van remove them if not required.

Thanks – worked! Just need to figure out how to show all the ingredients on the recipe page that I noted in the other post.
