I was wondering if you could help me with the following problem: on my test-site the header-Picture is suddenly not showing anymore. Do you have any idea why this could be?

Regarding your query, please once verify the steps to add the header image by the documentation link given below:

Also, make sure you publish the changes you made.
Further, if you face issues even after publishing the changes, please provide us the screenshot of the section so that we can inspect further.

I have inserted the picture as described – however, it does not work any more. It did work once though.

Regarding your query, the header image that you set appears on other than the front page.
The front page slider is showing needs to be enabled from the front page section, you can add post/page/category following the path Admin Panel > Appearance > Customize > Frontpage > Slider.
