If you have directly modify the theme file then you will lose the settings when upgarding to next version .

But if you have made all the changes through the additional CSS then you wont lose any change you have made in the theme .

To remove the search bar in the header in the responsive view use below given CSS .

For this go to Admin Panel > Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS and paste below given CSS .

@media only screen and (max-width: 767px){
.search-section {
  display: none;
}
}

Child theme is recommended way of modifying an existing theme.

If you modify a theme directly and it is updated, then your modifications will be lost and not only this you can modify any function by using child theme .

So it is strongly recommended to use the child theme for any modification.

To link the caption of news and event section you need to activate the child theme .

According to the theme feature the Masonry layout is only for the archive page as you can see in the demo version of the theme as well . The theme does not provide the feature of Masonry layout for the pages .

As we have inspected your site the Banner image is working fine as you can see in the below screen shot :

If your referring to the header section with the black background then we want to make you clear that this is not the section where banner image is seen . This is the header section and theme does not have the feature to show the image in this section. But if you wish to change the color of the header section then please let us know so that we could help you with some custom CSS.

The theme has provided the option to enable and disable the Front Page Widget Area . So to make it appear in the customizer screen you to enable it by going to Admin Panel > Appearance < Customize > Homepage Sections > Manage Sections and enable the Front Page widget.

Now you can add desire widget in this section and save them.
